Environment Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu

Environment, Water and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Prof Judy Wakhungu has hinted at the government’s plan to plant more than 26 million tree seedlings.

Wakhungu says the area set aside by the government for establishment and management of industrial plantation forests currently stands at 140,000 hectares which translates to 8% of the total gazetted forest reserves.

Speaking at Koibatek forest station in Eldama Ravine during the launch of the long rains tree planting season, Prof Wakhungu said that her ministry had put into operation the forest conservation and management act 2016.

She says through restoration and rehabilitation of deforested and degraded landscapes, Kenya has committed itself to rehabilitate more than 5.1 hectares by the year 2030.
