Hitches have continued to mar the ongoing countrywide mass voter registration exercise. And as leaders continue to traverse various parts of the country to sensitize Kenyans to register in large numbers, the opposition has insisted that irregularities witnessed in the exercise is just a ploy by the government to rig the august 2017 general elections, allegations that the Jubilee government has denied.

At first it was wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka claiming that he shares the same ID number with 23 year old Salome Njoroge.

Then CORD leader Raila Odinga alleged that there are plans by the government to register foreigners as voters, allegations that were denied by the government.

Then the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission gave out figures of certain of shared ID numbers recorded in the on going mass voter registration exercise.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati explained that there are 128,926 duplicate ID numbers in the BVR database which most of them were keyed into the system during the 2012 registration drive and do not relate to the current Mass Voter Registration campaign

He further assured Kenyans that the process of cleaning up the register was in good hands.

However it has now emerged that the national IDs of former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Daniel Moi have been used to register some people as voters.

Moi’s ID number 0000001 has been used to register one Joseph Marrion Nchabani Mwika.

Moi’s name does not appear in the BVR register when the ID number is keyed in. Instead Mwika’s name pops up.

Eight different Kenyans have used Kibaki’s ID number 00000002 to register as voters. The eight are Gitonga Wilson Kimathii, Kanja Julius Ngede Kihinge, Evans Kariuki Kirinya, Victoria Gatwiri, Mu Ko Mugara, Duncan Muia, Mbinya Wanjiru, and Caroline Nduta.

The eight have been assigned unique identification numbers in the BVR system.

IEBC has however denied allegations that the voters register has been compromised.
