Richard Alden, 53 when he appeared before the Kibera Law Courts on suspicion of murder

Cases of crimes of passion have been on the rise lately. Barely two weeks ago Leonard Kanari shot dead Christopher Adangi. This happened when Kanari found the deceased with his girlfriend, who was identified as Edna Kariuki, when he went to visit her early Saturday morning. It is alleged that the woman was escorting the deceased from her house at around 12:30 am when they ran into the suspect who shot the victim. On Saturday social media was set ablaze with news of former Wananchi Group CEO Richard Alden being implicated in the murder of his alleged lover Grace Wangeci Kinyanjui.

Police say Mr. Alden had taken Ms. Kinyanjui to Karen Hospital on Saturday afternoon claiming that she had shot herself in a suicide attempt. Police however did not buy that story. Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome said Mr. Alden and the deceased were involved in a romantic relationship and were residing together.

Tests carried out on the deceased’s body that were released by police showed that Ms. Kinyanjui had suffered a gunshot wound, stab wounds and a broken ring finger and thumb. Police also say that a spent cartridge was found at Mr. Alden’s house . It is however alleged that Mr. Alden is a licensed firearm holder. He is said to have the shot the woman after a disagreement.

Richard Alden moved to Kenya in 2013, where he became Chief Executive Officer of Wanachi Group until November 2015. He will be arraigned in court to answer to charges of murder.
