The Ministry of Education plans to recruit over 50,000 teachers in the next four years to cater for the expected increase in student enrollment starting next month.Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i says the government will review its budget for education to have more funds devoted to the employment of more teachers a move that goes hand in hand with the free day school program that is also set to commence in January.
The government intends to keep its promise with regards to the free day secondary education set to begin in January 2018. In line with that, the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission have been in talks for purposes of the recruitment of about 12, 696 new teachers annually.
TSC C.E.O Nancy Macharia says the employment of new teachers is estimated to cost 8.3 billion shillings annually and 33.2 billion for the next four years. Consequently, the Kenyan taxpayer will endure approximately 42.4 billion in the four year period.
The move was announced during an event where form one selection was launched and education CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i seemed focused on ensuring that enough teachers are deployed to schools.According to CS Matiang’i, majority of the new teachers, will be posted to county schools, which will enroll about 63 per cent of all candidates who sat this year’s KCPE.
