18 people have been confirmed dead and scores of others trapped under masses of concrete after an under construction flyover bridge collapsed in Varanasi in India. The killings and injuries by the flyover that was being built by a state run corporation collapsed crushing a mini bus, cars and two wheelers.
Five national disaster response force (NDRF) teams with about 250 personnel were deployed to the site of incident for rescue missions.
The utter Pradesh state bridge corporation limited has been contracted to build a 2,261 meters bridge in Varanasi with the part that collapsed having been laid three months ago, an official said.
Attacks from the opposition leader of Samajwadi party Akhilesh Yadav pointed at the government officials following the collapse for failure to conduct regular surveys at the construction site.
The collapse tragedy is similar to the Kolkata flyover collapse two years ago where 25 people were killed with score of others surviving with critical injuries.
