Following the University’s Academic Staff Union, UASU’s plans to issue a strike notice over the government’s delays to conclude talks for their 2017-2021 CBA, normal academic activities are still going on. The decision was taken to give the inter-public universities’ council consultative forum more time to consult with the new education Cs Amina Mohammed and Ps Japheth Micheni.
Two weeks have elapsed since the union issued a threat to call for a strike, following pending consultations. In the return to work formula signed by IPUCCF and UASU on 13th March 2017, the parties agreed that the 2017- 2021 CBA negotiations be concluded by 31st may last year, in order to allow for implementation by 1st July 2017.
On 9th December 2017, the two parties jointly agreed to extend the deadline. The negotiations for 2017-2021 CBA were to start on 18th December 2017 and be concluded by 31st January 2018. And now UASU has agreed to grant IPUCCF the additional time it requires to consult with the new leadership in the ministry of education, before it can make any move.
