Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki urged the Embu county administration to exercise fairness and prioritize deserving families during relief food distribution.The CS said this while on a tour of the region.
The relief food that was donated include maize, beans, rice, cooking fat and fortified food for babies and the aged to the 83,000 people who are affected by famine in Embu county.
The CS was accompanied by Embu County Commissioner Esther Maina and the local administration.
Meanwhile National Disaster Management Authority Director Sunya Orre during a national drought emergency fund regulations public participation workshop in Malindi noted that measures are underway to draft regulations on national drought emergency fund as a way of public participation in policy formation to mitigate the risks caused by the ongoing famine.
This comes after a similar meeting was organized in Garissa to cover the northern frontier counties that are also affected.
The treasury has set aside 5.2 billion shillings to deal with emergencies in the year starting July 1st, the latest indication that adverse weather and other disasters are expected to feature in the national budget for months to come.
