As the nurses’ strike hits the 105th day, some counties have decided to advertise positions of the striking nurses on the dailies. Previously, governors asked the county bosses to take disciplinary action on the striking nurses. Among the counties that have already advertised jobs are Kirinyaga and Kiambu. In areas like Laikipia, some of the nurses have voluntarily resumed work.

County governments have started advertising the positions of the nurses who are on strike and this comes as an unfortunate move to the nurses but beneficial to the hospitals.

Since the strike began 104 days ago, there has been death of patients in hospitals in Mombasa, congestion in hospitals in Nandi, Uasing Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kakamega and Bungoma as there are few nurses attending to patients.

Interested candidates for the nurses’ positions in counties like Kiambu and Kirinyaga have been asked to apply for the jobs. The county government in Kirinyaga has advertised 469 vacancies, 5 nursing officers and 464 registered nurses. It says candidates will be appointed on contract.

In Laikipia it is said that 235 out of 460 of the nurses have reported to work voluntarily as they fear losing their jobs.

On Sept 7th Kwale County advertised vacancies for 6 registered nurses and 6 community nurse posts for a 6month contract.

In areas like Embu, the Kenya National Union of Nurses said that some nurses sent text messages saying that sacking them is not the solution to their problems saying that it is unfair to take disciplinary action upon them.
