President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the national flag to Rio 2016 Olympics games national team with a call to Kenyans to rally behind the team at a colourful ceremony held at State House Nairobi.

The Head of State urged the athletes to go forth and conquer the world at the quadrennial greatest global sporting event using the same template that saw Kenya top the chart at last year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

The President assured the team of full support as they carry the Kenyan flag high at the world tournament.

The President commended the athletes for their self discipline, excellence and sacrifice on a personal and national level. The president reminded them of their role as goodwill ambassadors representing Kenya globally at the Olympics.

The President emphasized that Kenya has great strong and clean athletes of international repute who don’t need to use drugs to win and it is time to establish that Kenya can play and win clean.

He thanked sponsors,well wishers, trainers and all organizations for their facilitation of members of the Olympic Kenya team during their preparations for the Olympics.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario said team Kenya which has a contingent of 185 members including officials will be participating in seven fields at the Olympic Games which include athletics, archery, judo, boxing, swimming, rugby and weight lifting.

They team also included 38 athletes who will take part in Paralympics that will be held immediately after the Olympics.

The first batch to Rio departs on Sunday followed by the second and third groups that will leave for Brazil on July 31st and August 7th.
