CCTV footage has emerged of two armed robbers shooting a woman in broad daylight on Friday, August 7, along Moi Avenue, Mombasa.
The woman who was a mobile money agent later succumbed to the gunshot wounds while being taken to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Mombasa.
The incident happened at around 8:20 a.m. in the Express area of the city with the woman being shot twice on the chest.
The armed robbers ambushed Winnie Ombese while on a motorbike and attempted to snatch her handbag but she ducked before trying to flee the scene.
The robbers shot the woman from close range as she tried to flee. One of the assailants proceeded to take her handbag and sped off in a motorbike.
None of the witnesses around the scene came to the woman’s rescue immediately after being shot with questions also raised about the state of security as the incident happened in the Central Business District (CBD).
Juliana Bahati, a shop attendant at Express area revealed that one of the witnesses was still recovering from the shock of witnessing the murder.
“He saw the robbers attacking the woman, he retreated and on seeing the woman being shot he fainted, he just recently started talking after taking him to hospital,” she noted.
Ombese operated two mobile money shops in the area with detectives believing that she had been a target by the robbers who trailed her for some time.
Mombasa Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) boss Anthony Muriithi noted the robbers made away with an unknown amount of money.
Muriithi also added that they had some leads to the incident and would soon ensure that justice was served for the family of Ombese.
Police are urging the public to provide more information on the whereabouts of the two robbers especially to those who witnessed the incident.
